John 12:2-3 Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
“The house was filled with the fragrance”… Mary’s act of love not only anointed the feet of Christ, it filled the whole house…. every room…. every nook and cranny. You couldn’t get away from it; It was overpowering!
The offering of that which was most precious to her Lord spoke of Mary’s complete devotion to Jesus. Mary’s act of love could not be hidden, all understood her love for her Lord, some…Judas…misunderstood!
As prayerful confident disciples of Jesus Christ we are called to love our Lord with the same intensity as Mary; to offer to him that which is precious and costly to us. Faith that doesn’t ‘fill the house’ so that all who enter and take note is no faith at all. Our acts of devotion may well result in derision from others but they are as a fragrant offering to the Lord. Like Mary may we give to the Lord that which costs us dear.
